The Oregon Progressive Party's State Council has initiated the 21-day period during which Members or Supporters of the Party may submit to the State Council proposed nominations for the 5 State Councilor positions to be elected this summer.

These are volunteer, unpaid positions.  One is for 1 year, one for 2 years, one for 3 years, one for 4 years, and one for 5 years.  After this year, one State Council position will be up for election each year.

Please send the names (and, if possible, email addresses) of proposed nominees to info@progparty.org on or before June 28, 2014.

The 16 categories of duties of the State Council, as stated in the Bylaws, are:

1. Appointing officers and senior advisers;
2. Managing day-to-day activities of the operation of the Party;
3. Budgeting and finances, including seeking contributions and assisting candidate's fundraising efforts;

The Rocky Anderson ticket includes Luis Gonzalez for Vice-President of the United States.  Robert Wolfe, Cameron Whitten, and Chris Henry are exclusively the candidates of the Oregon Progressive Party.  Steven Reynolds has been cross-nominated by the Pacific Green Party and the Libertarian Party of Oregon.  Woody Broadnax has been cross-nominated by the Pacific Green Party.  Peter DeFazio has been cross-nominated by the Democratic Party and by the Working Families Party of Oregon.

The deadline for Oregon minor parties to nominate and/or endorse candidates for the 2012 General Election is August 28, 2012.

The Oregon Progressive Party (OPP) shall conduct its monthly membership meetings on June 12, July 10, and August 14. At the July and August meetings, the Party may discuss candidates who are seeking the Party's nomination or endorsement and may recommend such nomination or endorsement of a candidate to the State Nominating Panel. The candidates to be discussed at any meeting are those who have completed the "Steps for Candidates" below at least 7 days prior to the meeting.

Steps for Candidates

1.    Determine whether you meet the legal requirements to run for the office you seek. For example, to run for a seat in the Oregon Legislature, you must have been a resident of the district at least since January 1, 2012. You may ask questions about the legal requirements by submitting them to legal@progparty.org.

2.    Complete the Candidate Questionnaire.

3.    Commit to supporting the OPP platform.

4.    Commit to complying with all laws pertaining to campaign finance reporting.

5.    Attend the subsequent OPP monthly membership meeting and answer questions by OPP members.

We've had two great days with Ralph and Rocky in town and we'll have our monthly meeting at our office here starting at 7pm tonight. Below is a sampling of the media. Ralph packed 250 people at noon into Powell's, then had more than 600 people pack into Lewis and Clark to see him debate former Bush admin. official and neo-con Jamie Fly (Ralph won that debate easily)! Today we had a great press conference with Rocky & Ralph (video here) , had an article in Oregonian, two TV channels (KATU and KPTV), and Oregon public broadcasting there.  Then we had a successful rally with Rocky at PSU. This is a great kick-off for the Progressive Party and 2012 Elections let's keep the momentum up and firing...go we go...

At a press conference in Portland today, Ralph Nader introduced and announced his support for Rocky Anderson as the 2012 nominee of the Oregon Progressive Party for President of the United States.

The Oregon Progressive Party is a ballot-qualified minor party in Oregon.  It was created by voter petition as the Peace Party in 2008 and that year nominated Ralph Nader for President.  The party changed its name in 2009 to the Oregon Progressive Party to reflect its broader platform.

Rocky Anderson is the progressive former 2-term Mayor of Salt Lake City, Utah.  He has now obtained the Presidential general election ballot in 3 states--which is 3 more states than Ralph Nader had obtained at this stage in 2008 on his way to appearing on the ballot in 45 states.

The Oregon Progressive Party has adopted this process for nominating a candidate to run in the January 31, 2012, special election to fill the currently vacant seat of U.S. Representative for the 1st Congressional district of Oregon.

Steps for Candidates

1.    Complete the Candidate Questionnaire, including the Federal Candidate Questionnaire, by October 26.

2.    Make a statement at public meeting of the Oregon Progressive Party:

3.    Commit to following campaign protocol, supporting the OPP platform, and running a good campaign

4.    Comply with all laws regarding campaigning and reporting of contributions and expenditures, including all federal laws and rules.

Steps for the Party

1.    Any OPP member (as of October 1, 2011) who has attended at least one prior Party meeting may participate at the November 8 meeting and vote on the candidates.

2.    The OPP State Nominating Panel will officially select the nominee, based upon the recommendation of the members.

3.    The Party will issue a Certificate of Nomination for the candidate to file with the Secretary of State or or before December 1, 2011.
